It doesn’t have color and smells like gasoline. Heptane is produced in the form of liquid and is consistently ranked among the most useful industrial chemicals because of its ideal chemical properties. In the fuel industry, heptane was used to define the octane rating scale. Pure heptane is given a rating of 0, so all gasoline is measured against pure heptane to determine their rating.
